How to maintain white teeth?
Have you recently had professional teeth whitening at our Laval dental clinic and do you want to maintain this new whiteness on your teeth for the long term? We understand! After all, who wouldn’t dream of a beautiful, healthy, white smile? Here are our tips from dentists to help you keep your teeth white after teeth whitening.
Pay attention to what you eat and drink
For at least the first 48 hours following your teeth whitening, and even longer if you want optimal results, you must pay close attention to your diet so that you do not eat or drink foods that could stain your newly white teeth. Here is a non-exhaustive list of foods to avoid:
Coffee
Tea
Red wine
Red fruits (raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, etc.)
Tomato sauce
Soy sauce
Vegetables that stain (beets, carrots, spinach, etc.)
Brown soft drinks
Colored spices (paprika, curry, saffron, etc.)
Beware of acidic foods
Also avoid acidic foods, such as lemon, grapefruit, pineapple, etc., as they damage your tooth enamel. When you consume such foods, it is ideal to rinse your mouth with water afterwards to prevent tooth erosion. After at least 30 minutes of waiting, you can then brush your teeth.
Maintain excellent dental hygiene
If you want optimal results for as long as possible after your teeth whitening, a crucial factor will be your dental hygiene. We often know the basic rules, but sometimes it is more difficult to apply them daily.
Limit your consumption of coffee, red wine and tobacco as much as possible.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day, for at least 2 minutes.
Use dental floss to properly dislodge food particles stuck between your teeth and to clean the space between your teeth.
Change your toothbrush every 2 months.
Make regular appointments with your dentist for a routine cleaning or for other teeth whitening if you feel the need.
Use the right dental products
Did you know that certain ingredients in colored mouthwashes and toothpastes can accelerate the yellowing of teeth? It is therefore important to avoid them and to use a toothpaste containing fluoride, in order to strengthen the enamel of your teeth, as well as hydrogen peroxide, in order to keep them white as long as possible. In addition, avoid toothpastes containing too much silica since they irreversibly damage the enamel of the teeth because of their abrasive power.
We hope that these few tips will allow you to enjoy your new white smile even longer!
