Oral health in the elderly

Oral health in the elderly

Did you know that aging increases the risk of oral problems? In addition, these issues can have repercussions on people’s general health. As the elderly often have an already fragile health, it is all the more important for them to take their dental hygiene seriously.

What are typical oral problems in older people?

Some problems are directly related to aging, others to taking medication, certain diseases, or poor dental hygiene. Here are the most common issues:

Sensitive teeth: we are talking here about sensitivity to hot or cold, or even to the touch. It can be particularly disturbing at a time of life when eating is already more difficult.

Exposed roots: Over time, teeth can begin to loosen, which then exposes the roots of the teeth. They are therefore more exposed to germs, which cause cavities.

Yellow or stained teeth: it is normal for the color of the teeth to change with age. Did you also know that plaque builds up faster with age? This promotes stains on the teeth.

Dry mouth: this is a really common problem among the elderly. It is often caused by taking certain medications or certain disorders. In addition to being unpleasant, over time, it can affect oral health.

What health problems can result from poor dental hygiene?

One of the health problems that stems from poor dental hygiene and perhaps the least suspected is pneumonia or any other lung infection. Indeed, especially in the elderly who have difficulty swallowing, bacteria are more likely to be inhaled and cause various infections. Good dental hygiene, by eliminating these bacteria, therefore helps to prevent the problem. Bacteria can also infiltrate the bloodstream and even the heart. This is not to be taken lightly.

Of course, all dental problems are also part of the list: cavities, gingivitis, abscess, oral infections, abscess, periodontitis, tooth loss, etc.

How to adapt the toothbrush of the elderly?

In some older people, reduced dexterity can lead to difficulty brushing their teeth properly and therefore cause poor dental hygiene. To remedy this situation, there are several tips regarding the adjustment of the toothbrush.

1- Use an electric toothbrush instead of a manual toothbrush

2- Lengthen or widen the handle of the toothbrush

Of course, the most important thing is to choose a toothbrush that you like and that you will want to use twice a day!

After all, we are never too old to take good care of our teeth!
